IELTS band scores explained

Every IELTS result is a band from 1 to 9, in half-band steps, for each of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, plus an overall band.

What each band means

Countries listed under each band are where universities commonly ask for it. Typical, not official. Varies by university and course, so check yours.

  1. 9

    Expert

Fully operational command: appropriate, accurate and fluent, with complete understanding.

    Typical IELTS range

The top of the scale. It goes beyond the typical requirement in every destination listed.

  2. 8

    Very good

Fully operational command with only occasional unsystematic inaccuracies; may misunderstand some things in unfamiliar situations, and handles complex, detailed argument well.

    Typical IELTS range

An exceptional score. It is above what most universities in these destinations ask for, so it comfortably clears the typical requirement. A few highly selective programmes may still set their own bar.

  3. 7

    Good

Operational command with occasional inaccuracies; generally handles complex language well and understands detailed reasoning.

    Typical IELTS range

A strong score. It meets what most universities in these destinations ask for, and puts the more competitive courses within reach.

    • Canada
    • Australia
    • New Zealand
    • USA
    • Ireland
    • Germany
    • Netherlands
  4. 6

    Competent

Effective command despite some inaccuracies and misunderstandings; can use and understand reasonably complex language, particularly in familiar situations.

    Typical IELTS range

You're in the zone. This is where many university requirements begin, so a lot of doors are already open, and a little more opens the more competitive courses.

  5. 5

    Modest

Partial command; copes with overall meaning in most situations but makes many mistakes.

    Typical IELTS range

You're closer than it feels. Most universities in these destinations ask for a little more, but this is a band you can build on. Find your weakest skill, practise it, and watch the score move.

  6. 4

    Limited

Basic competence limited to familiar situations; frequent problems in understanding and expression.

    Typical IELTS range

You're closer than it feels. Most universities in these destinations ask for a little more, but this is a band you can build on. Find your weakest skill, practise it, and watch the score move.

  7. 3

    Extremely limited

Conveys and understands only general meaning in very familiar situations; frequent breakdowns.

    Typical IELTS range

Everyone's first score starts somewhere, and yours is a real starting point. Universities here typically ask for more, so take a practice test, see where you stand, and build from there.

  8. 2

    Intermittent

Great difficulty understanding spoken and written English.

    Typical IELTS range

Everyone's first score starts somewhere, and yours is a real starting point. Universities here typically ask for more, so take a practice test, see where you stand, and build from there.

  9. 1

    Non-user

Essentially no ability to use the language beyond a few isolated words.

    Typical IELTS range

Everyone's first score starts somewhere, and yours is a real starting point. Universities here typically ask for more, so take a practice test, see where you stand, and build from there.

How do people from your country score?

Official averages from IELTS itself, so you can see where you stand among test-takers like you.

How the overall band is worked out

Your overall band is the average of your four skill bands, rounded to the nearest half band. An average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band, and one ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band. For example, 6.5, 7, 6.5 and 6 average 6.5.

What score do I need?

It depends on the country, the university, the course and the visa. Typical ranges are general guidance; official minimums are ones we've checked at the source. Your university's own requirement always wins, so confirm it before you apply.
