Many universities have begun installing solar panels on lecture halls and residence buildings as part of broader efforts to reduce their carbon footprint. Advocates argue that campuses are well suited to this kind of investment because they combine large flat roof areas with predictable daytime electricity demand from teaching buildings, libraries and laboratories. Several universities have also begun experimenting with small on-site wind turbines, although these have proven more controversial: some staff and local residents have raised concerns about noise and visual impact, particularly on campuses located near residential neighbourhoods. Solar installations, by contrast, have faced comparatively little local opposition. Funding for these projects usually comes from a mixture of government grants, private investment partnerships and, in some cases, student-led fundraising campaigns. A handful of universities have reported that their solar arrays now generate enough electricity to cover all daytime demand during the summer months, when teaching load is lower and daylight hours are longer, though winter generation remains far below total demand at every campus surveyed so far. Critics of these schemes note that the upfront installation costs are substantial, and that payback periods can extend well beyond a decade depending on the size and location of the installation. Even so, most universities that have completed a full installation report that they intend to expand their renewable energy capacity further within the next five years.
